Digital Mediterranean Space (EDM) – “I’m Mediterranean”

It is with great pleasure for WISeKey to participate in the inauguration of the first “Summit of Mediterranean Cities and Local Governments” that will be celebrated in Malaga. The Summit will group two main initiatives: the inauguration of the “Summit of Cities and local Governments of the Mediterranean” and the launching of the innovating platform of the Digital Mediterranean Space (EDM).

The Summit of the EDM will convert Malaga into the Technological City of reference in Europe, and the Mediterranean into a center of attention at a world-wide level. The official launching of the EDM will be realized in the presence of leaders of the public and private sectors who wish to become the drivers of  Mediterranean development and to collaborate in the creation of a true “MEDITERRANEAN DIGITAL SPACE”.

Personalities of the business world will come together with members of the Central Government, Mayors, representatives of NGO and celebrities of the artistic world, to celebrate this event. It is to be noted that  the internationally famous Malaga actor, Antonio Banderas, will be among these personalities. His attendance, on  October 3rd , will re-inforce the importance of the project “I’M MEDITERRANEAN”.

In 2007, WISeKey, OISTE.org and the Malaga Valley through the Technological Park of Andalusia, presented an initiative for the creation of a center for technology  and citizen platform services for all the Mediterranean. This initiative has already acquired a new dimension, based essentially on the objectives established by the President of the Spanish Government, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, at the meeting of the Union for the Mediterranean (UPM), organized recently by President Sarkozy in Paris. It was at this moment, in order to promote a true Mediterranean digital space, that the Spanish President invited all the government leaders of Europe and the Mediterranean countries to the Summit in Malaga.

The Summit essentially tries to promote the importance of Information and Communications Technologies (TIC) in the socio-economic and cultural strengthening, the cooperation and the sustainable development of the region with the aim of converting Malaga into the Hub of the EDM and the Mediterranean region into the axis of the global information society, with the following services:

e-Identify: EDM is the platform designated to identify and to connect the citizens, cities and local governments and company leaders, to safe and trustworthy services. It offers the opportunity to discuss and to construct together  the EDM and the creation of on-line services that the different Mediterranean cities, represented by their mayors, will personalize integrating their current solutions of e-government through a unique reference position or identity: : “Soy Mediterráneo”, “I am Mediterranean”, “Je suis Méditerranéen”, “Sono Mediterraneo”, “مديترّنن أنا”.

e-Collaborate: EDM is the platform that allows the optimization of the commercial, technological and cultural relations between the European Union and the countries of the Mediterranean and Africa. The services center for the cities that do not have the means or the knowledge to develop applications that allow the creation of a local hybrid that ensures the universal access to the TICs and Internet, for all the Mediterranean citizens, mainly in administration questions, culture, commerce, security and confidentiality.

m-Services (mobility): EDM is the platform designated to create tools or services that allow the eradication of  poverty and to reach the goals and objectives of sustainable development for the region. It also gives the possibility of a high level of mobile services in the areas of education, health, economy, tourism, social, politic and culture, for all the citizens of the Mediterranean countries, according to their geo-location. This will make it unique, because the EDM will take into consideration the current condition of the mobile migrant communities that are permanently increasing in the Mediterranean space.

e-Center of encounter: EDM is the platform that offers space for investigation and study. The EDM must be the result of numerous investments and efforts destined to develop and convert the Euroafrican Hub into the leader of the Euro-Mediterranean initiatives.
